| | to earn stewards the legal right to help co-workers. It is not a position to take lightly.
Stewards are expected to represent ALL workers in their shop. Stewards that play favorites or use the position to curry favor with management can incur serious legal consequences. As our Union members become more aware of their rights that risk becomes greater. If a steward does not want to be the focus of a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) investigation or an internal Union trial court proceeding they would be well advised to learn their responsibilities or resign if these are in conflict with their motives or abilities. Remember that their are two types of Unfair labor Practices. (ULP) One that the Union files against the Company alleging illegal activity and the other that a Union member can file against the Union for failing the Duty to Represent. (DFR) Stewards need to know that their actions can have legal consequences. Just because it hasn't happened in the past does not mean it can't happen in these turbulent changing times. Ignorance may not be bliss. Know your RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES!!!
Stewards should expect to be tested by management if they honestly advocate for their co-workers. A supervisor may simply say NO at a grievance meeting even when it is a clear case of injustice. Don't get angry or frustrated. Follow the grievance procedure and use your legal right to request relevant information. Get help from the Union. Giving up makes the problem worse for everyone and you will not be very proud of yourself at the end of the day.
Stewards are expected, going forward, to understand their role as steward and become an active participant in the Union. Apathy will hurt everyone. Apathy will cost you and your co-workers $$$$$.
This page has links and information to get you informed. It is time to decide what role you will be playing in the future. Our employers are changing. Our stewards need to change or they will be more of a liability than an asset.
Stewards will be receiving surveys specifically designed for them. We will need you make your motives, abilities and commitment to the Union clear. The actions of our employers have created and driven this urgent need.
